Before your breast augmentation, you deserve to know all of your breast implant options. In McKinney, TX, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Naveen Setty is highly experienced in breast augmentation, and can explain all your different implant choices. Dr. Setty says, “There's a lot of misconceptions and a lot of half-truths out there. A lot of things that people hear from other people. I want to make sure my patients are really educated, so that's an important part of the breast augmentation consultation.”

At Setty Plastics & Aesthetics, Dr. Setty will work with you to tailor a treatment plan that will match your personal goals and desires. Here’s an overview of all the features of the different breast implants on the market today.

Types of Breast Implants

Silicone gel breast implants: These are perhaps the most well-known breast implants. The silicone gel inside results in a natural look and feel that is similar to breast tissue. They can come with a textured or smooth surface. Because of their design, women cannot detect an implant rupture just by a physical examination, so the FDA recommends women obtain an MRI every 2-3 years to check for ruptures. Patients over the age of 22 can get silicone gel implants.

Silicone gel “Gummy bear,” implants: The silicone gel inside of these implants is more cohesive, and “gummy bear” like. Women often select a teardrop shape in these implants, which can sometimes rotate and look distorted. An additional surgery is usually needed to correct implant rotation, which can be time consuming. These implants have a textured surface and are FDA-approved for patients over 22.

Saline breast implants: These implants are only offered with a smooth surface, and are filled with a sterile saltwater solution much like an IV at the hospital. Among your breast implant options, you can know if you have a leak in a saline implant by a quick glance in the mirror. The saline will be safely absorbed by your body, so you don’t have to worry about sticky silicone gel coming into contact with your tissue. Unlike silicone gel implants, saline implants are not filled until they are inserted into the breast pocket, so they require a smaller incision to place. Saline implants are FDA-Approved for patients over 18.

Structured saline breast implants, or the IDEAL IMPLANT®: These types of breast implants are smooth-surfaced and filled with saline for peace of mind. Unlike older saline implants, the IDEAL IMPLANT has an inner layered structure to hold the saline in place. You’ll get a look and feel similar to silicone, without having to worry about regular MRIs. The IDEAL IMPLANT was designed with tapered edges to contour more naturally to the chest wall. Like other saline implants, you can detect a leak in the IDEAL IMPLANT by looking in the mirror. A recent study showed that these implants have significantly lower rupture and capsule contracture rates when compared to silicone gel implants. They require a smaller incision than silicone gel, and are FDA-Approved for patients over 18. Dr. Setty says, “Even though silicone implants have been shown to be safe and most women do really well with them, there are still a lot of women who come in here that have reservations about using silicone and having silicone implants in their body. So, when I saw and felt the IDEAL IMPLANT, I thought it would be a nice option for women and it has turned out to be a really good option.”

Breast Implant Options: Size, Shape, and Profile

Not only do you get to select which type of material you want inside your breast implant, but you also can pick which size, shape, and profile you like best. Dr. Setty will work with you to be sure the implant you want is a good choice for your body type and chest wall.

Size
Breast implant size is chosen based on the cubic centimeters (CCs) of saline or silicone used. To choose the correct volume, Dr. Setty will look at how much native breast tissue exists and the size you want to be.

Shape
Implants are produced in either a teardrop or round shape. For patients that want added fullness in the upper part of their breast, round is the most popular choice. For those wanting a natural drop to their breasts, a teardrop shape is a good option. Some types of breast implants such as the IDEAL IMPLANT are only available in round shapes.

Profile
Implant profile refers to how far out the implant projects from the chest. In other words, this is what you see from the side angle. You can choose a low, moderate, or high profile implant depending on the look you want to achieve and how wide your chest wall is.
