Ideal Candidates for a Tummy Tuck

Both men and women can benefit from a tummy tuck in Dallas & McKinney with Dr. Setty if they have excess skin and fat in the abdomen. The surgery is best for those at a stable weight, as it's not a weight loss solution. Liposuction may be an alternative if the skin has good elasticity but there are still pockets of fat. This treatment is best for non-smokers in good health generally.

What are my Tummy Tuck Options?

An abdominoplasty improves the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and repairing weakened or separated abdominal muscles. Body contouring is done under general anesthesia and Dr. Setty provides various tummy tuck techniques, each tailored to different patient needs. These techniques include:

Full Tummy Tuck

This procedure involves an incision made from hip to hip, allowing the removal of excess skin and fat, repairing the abdominal muscle structure and removing fat through liposuction of the abdominal area for comprehensive improvement in the midsection.

Extended Tummy Tuck

This method is suitable for individuals needing more extensive improvement with both excess skin and muscle structure and also includes liposuction of the flanks (love handles).

Mini Tummy Tuck

For patients who don’t require muscle repair, this technique focuses on improving the lower abdomen, involving a smaller incision and addressing loose skin.

Muscle repair can sometimes be performed as well.

Liposuction may or may not be needed.

Reverse Tummy Tuck

This procedure is for patients whose main concern is loose skin to the upper abdomen area (under the breasts).  Typically, no muscle repair is required.  Liposuction can often be combined with this procedure.  This procedure is often beneficial in patients who already had a mini tummy tuck or liposuction procedures that didn’t address upper abdominal skin.  This procedure can also be part of an upper body lift that is performed for patients after massive weight loss.

Abdominoplasty Recovery

After surgery, patients wear a compression garment to reduce swelling. Pain management medications are provided, and walking might be challenging initially. Normal activities can be resumed within two weeks, while workouts can usually begin in 6 to 8 weeks. Even with a surgical incision placed in an area that will be hidden with clothing, you will have some scarring that will fade with time. We also encourage the use of a scar therapy medication (such as silicone scar gel) that helps decrease the visibility of the scars.

Tummy Tuck FAQ

How is pain controlled after a tummy tuck?

How is pain controlled after a tummy tuck?

Dr. Setty attempts to minimize the need for narcotics as much as possible. However, any pain after surgery is managed with specific medications, local anesthetics, and muscle relaxers to alleviate discomfort. Dr. Setty does inject a long-acting local anesthetic called Exparel® during surgery to help manage pain for 48-72 hours after surgery. New techniques, including Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy, are also a promising tool to help with pain control for the first 7-10 days.

How long do I need to take off work after a tummy tuck?

Patients typically need at least 2 weeks off work, with the possibility of a return to some tasks within 7 to 10 days, depending on the job type.
