What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast enhancement surgery is a procedure that adds volume to breasts for a fuller look. It is known as one of the most common cosmetic surgeries, granting women who dislike their breast size numerous opportunities for improvement. With the help of breast implants or fat grafting, this cosmetic treatment improves breast size and shape and produces a gorgeous and balanced outcome. Dallas, TX board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Naveen Setty is highly trained in implementing this procedure and performs many breast augmentations year-round. When you have your consultation at Setty Plastics & Aesthetics, Dr. Setty will address your aesthetic desires and concerns and provide you with all of the choices available, while also tailoring a treatment plan to exceed your personal goals. To help you envision your final results, Setty Plastics & Aesthetics utilizes Vectra XT 3D imaging. These ultra-high-resolution images provide you and Dr. Setty with a three-dimensional and incredibly accurate idea of what you can expect post augmentation.

Breast Implants Options

When you are in your consultation with Dr. Setty, the appropriate implant will be chosen based on your body size and shape, as well as your desired outcome. Breast implants are made in varying shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures — each of which are considered carefully in order to achieve the wanted outcome. Still, the most commonly chosen breast implants are silicone or saline, both widely popular and approved to use per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). An important fact is that women considering saline breast implants must be 18 years old, while patients must be 22 years of age in order to undergo surgery with silicone. Two other types of augmentations include a form-stable implant known as a gummy bear implant and an autologous approach through fat grafting. In addition to the type of implant used, there are other notable factors to decide:

  • Size
Breast implant size is chosen based on the cubic centimeters (CCs) of saline or silicone used. To choose the correct volume, Dr. Setty will decipher how much native breast tissue exists and the size you wish to attain. In the operating room, it is normal for Dr. Setty to temporarily fit multiple implants to get a better idea on the more suitable fit.
  • Shape
Implants are produced in either a teardrop or round shape. Both of these shapes are widely used; however, the majority of our patients choose a round shape. It generally appears more natural while adding a fullness to the top portion of the breast that many patients want.
  • Profile
Implant profile references the how far out the implant looks (projection). In other words, this is what you see from the side angle. Most projections include a profile that ranges from low to extra high.

We understand all of the considerations may seem overwhelming, but choosing the right implant is somewhat easy once the objectives are understood during the consultation. These considerations, paired with Dr. Setty's skill, make certain the anticipated outcome is achieved.

Should I get Saline or Silicone Implants?

The type of implant selected will be based on the discussion between you and Dr. Setty. Advantages and disadvantages exist for both.

Am I A candidate for Breast Augmentation?

The decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery is a personal one for women. If you are considering this surgery, it is essential you do it for yourself. Ideal candidates should be healthy and at a normal weight with breasts that are formed, and be the right age to receive implants. Patients who are unhappy with the aesthetics of the chest because they look flat could benefit from this surgery. Moreover, if your breasts have changed due to age, pregnancy, or weight loss, this surgery can give them life with increased shape and fullness. It is a welcomed answer for those who weight train or have limited native breast mass.

How does breast augmentation work?

Incision placement as well as implant location are factors that will need to be made prior to surgery. During breast augmentation, the chosen incision is created and then the chosen implant will be placed into its position. There are two techniques that may be applied for implant placement. These are either under the pectoral muscle, or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. The choice as to where to insert the the breast implant incision location is based on varying factors. This involves the size and type of implant, plus the expertise of Dr. Setty. Regardless of incision type, scarring is usually minimal. Where to place the implant is based upon your implant size, activity level, and body type.

What can I Expect after breast augmentation?

Cosmetic breast surgery is an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. After completing the incision, the chosen implant will be placed through the incision opening and deposited into a surgically created pocket, and then secured to its correct position. Following the placement of the implant, the incision is carefully secured with skin adhesives or sutures. Each patient will be taken into a recovery area and monitored prior to being released. You will be instructed to continue wearing a medical sports bra to help reduce swelling. Several days after surgery, the swelling will begin to dissipate, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they get used to their new position. Most patients can resume everyday activities within several days; however, physical exertion such as exercise should be delayed for approximately a couple of months. Breast augmentation surgery produces gorgeous outcomes that feel and appear normal. This procedure oftentimes can be a life changer for many individuals, offering the opportunity to feel more confident.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

Will I be able to breast feed after a breast augmentation?

Yes! There should be no issues with breast feeding if an inframammary crease incision is used and implants are placed under the muscle. Even if the implants are placed above the muscle, there is minimal risk to breast feeding issues. The only time that there may be a small risk of breast feeding issues would be with an areolar incision to place implants. Even in that situation, the risk of any breast feeding issues is very small.

How much does breast augmentation cost?
Your total cost for breast augmentation will vary depending on your implant choices and whether you are having any other surgeries simultaneously. Once your treatment plan is developed in your consultation, Dr. Setty will talk to you about estimated costs and financing options. To make sure your results match your goals and last a long time, it is better to focus on quality over costs.

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your treatment plan may include breast augmentation, a lift, or both. A breast lift removes loose skin and improves the position of the breasts, while implants address the size and shape. In your consultation with Dr. Setty, he will listen to your concerns and goals before discussing your best treatment options. An augmentation and lift are usually a part of a mommy makeover to rejuvenate the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you want to remove or replace your implants. Should this happen, Dr. Setty can perform breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants can either be replaced with different implants or simply removed. If you choose to have your implants removed, you may need to have a breast lift because larger implants may stretch your skin.
