What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
When your breasts are too large, they can produce irritation and limit activities. A breast reduction by our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Naveen Setty, may improve your health and quality of life. Excessively large breasts can create physical and social concerns for women. Extremely large breasts can also lead to insecurity issues and overall embarrassment, as well as aches and pains. Dr. Setty is a plastic surgeon serving McKinney, and Dallas, TX and has helped countless women lessen the size of their breasts.
Breast reduction typically produces the most satisfying results of all plastic surgery procedures at Setty Plastics & Aesthetics, as it leads to a more positive body image, better body proportions, better clothing fit, and the elimination of physical pain, and emotional discomfort. This surgery also relocates the areolas and nipples, so they appear normal and in line with the new size. In most situations, a breast lift can be implemented to provide a more taut and healthier appearance.
Am I A Candidate for Breast Reduction?
Women may undergo breast reduction surgery for many reasons, such as experiencing chronic pain in the back, shoulders, neck, or head due to the weight and pressure of the breasts. Additionally, large breasts can cause breast sagging or create a disproportionate body shape. They may also lead to issues such as unwanted attention, emotional issues, and social anxiety. Furthermore, the weight of heavy breasts can make exercise difficult or painful and can also cause shoulder grooves and skin irritation from bra straps and skin chafing. Breast reduction can relieve many of these complaints and improve your appearance and quality of life. A skillful plastic surgeon like Dr. Setty will listen to your concerns and goals and has the training to create a better, natural appearance.

How does breast reduction work?
Surgical breast reduction is an outpatient procedure and is conducted with the patient under general anesthesia. It can take up to 3 – 5 hours. The time frame for the surgery depends on several factors, including the incision type, the general surgical technique, and finally, the amount of tissue removal needed. The areola and nipple area repositioning is another factor. Typically, liposuction is necessary for tissue and fat reduction to reduce the breast size. At the time of the initial consult, all of these aspects are addressed with Dr. Setty. Scarring is also carefully examined and talked through as it is likely to occur. However, modern techniques have led to a significant decrease in the visibility of scarring. The incision type will be based on the size of the breast and overall reduction, which could be either an inverted-T or a straight line (vertical) incision. Breast fat and tissue will then be removed, and the surrounding skin and tissue will be pulled and lifted.
The cost of breast reduction surgery includes varying factors such as the surgeon’s fees, hospital fees, facility fees, and anesthesia fees. You will be provided with a cost estimate during your consultation. Women who suffer from chronic pain or other similar symptoms may be able to have a portion or all of their procedure covered by their medical insurance. Health insurance companies may require a certain amount of breast tissue to be removed in order to qualify for financial coverage. Your insurance provider can offer you more information regarding your potential for coverage of this procedure. Most patients will be able to observe their final results within six weeks to three months after their surgery.
What can I Expect after breast reduction?
Once surgery has been completed, you will be monitored closely in our quiet recovery room and then sent home to begin the healing process. A thin tube for draining is usually inserted near the incision area to assist with bleeding and fluid build up. A compression bra should be worn for a few days to increase blood circulation to the breasts during the immediate recovery. In a month or so, the breasts will naturally fall into position and the post-surgery effects will diminish. Most patients at Setty Plastics & Aesthetics say they feel lighter, relieved, and more confident. Following surgical breast reduction, you can enjoy the clothes you so want to wear (but couldn't) and feel excited about your new shape. Keep in mind it is important to maintain a healthy body weight so the outcomes are not compromised.
Pain and discomfort may be present for the first week after surgery. Oral pain medications will be prescribed for your comfort during this time. Swelling may also occur but should subside after 2 – 6 weeks. Most patients will experience immediate relief of any neck, shoulder, back, or headache pain that was formerly caused by the size and weight of their breasts.

Breast Reduction FAQ
What size will I be after a breast reduction?
This is a very common question patients will ask prior to surgery. It is also a very difficult question to answer as there are many factors that go in to a patient’s final size. The first reason this can be a difficult question to answer is that there is no consistent sizing with bras and across bra manufacturers. So a D cup is not always the same with all bras. Second, I typically leave the nipple and areola attached to the breast during a breast reduction. This means that some breast tissue has to be left behind to provide adequate blood flow to the nipple and areola. The amount left behind will vary from patient to patient. Finally, I will take a patient’s desired outcome as well as their overall body type to help determine final size. Despite these many factors, in general most patients will end up anywhere from a C cup to a D cup after surgery. At the time of consultation, I will be able to discuss this further with you.
