Understanding Gynecomastia

Enlarged male breasts typically result from the excessive growth of breast tissue, causing a more feminine chest appearance. This condition, often attributed to hormonal imbalances or certain medications, affects men across different age groups. Gynecomastia may, in certain cases, improve with changes in diet and exercise, however, in many cases a surgical procedure is required. Dr. Setty offers male breast reduction procedures to address this condition effectively. The reasons behind gynecomastia may include:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Certain medications
  • Obesity
  • Hereditary factors
  • Aging
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Thyroid disorders

Surgical Technique

Initial Assessment

Dr. Setty will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your chest to determine the extent of gynecomastia and develop a customized treatment plan.

Anesthesia

The surgery usually takes place under general anesthesia, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.

Liposuction

Liposuction is performed to remove excess fat from the chest area, creating a more contoured appearance.  Liposuction can sometimes remove any glandular tissue that is present as well.

Excision

If excess glandular tissue is present, Dr. Setty will excise it through discreet incisions, particularly around the areola.

Skin Tightening

For cases where significant skin laxity is observed, the excess skin is trimmed and remaining skin is tightened to achieve a smoother and firmer chest contour.  Incisions can sometimes still be hidden around the areola but if there is extensive skin excess, incisions may need to be placed along the bottom of the chest.  If there is mild skin laxity, BodyTite treatment can be combined with liposuction to achieve the skin tightening needed.

Repositioning of Nipple and Areola

The procedure may also involve repositioning the nipple and areola to match the new chest appearance and achieve a more natural look.

Closing Incisions

The incisions are meticulously closed, and the treated area is bandaged to support the healing process and minimize swelling.

Recovery

Following surgery, patients are advised to wear compression garments for 4 weeks to reduce swelling and aid the healing process. Post-operative instructions are provided to support recovery and ensure optimal results.
